You can view the pages her class made and download the book at the end. McGowan’s site has a Winter Train Ride booklet on her side that she uses as a response activity. I also purchased jingle bell necklaces from Oriental Trading for a souvenir.

The teacher next door placed another bell in each child’s locker while we were “riding” The Polar Express. We had hot chocolate (with a candy cane for stirring) and a donut to warm up after the cold ride to the North Pole. Watching the video (if you can find it) might be even more effective. (I returned the tickets to them at the end of the day to keep as a souvenir.) Thanks to Colleen for allowing us to download the tickets from her site:Īnd we’re off! I dim the lights and read the book to the children. I used a Christmas tree hole punch at the bottom of the ticket as I collected them and they boarded our train.

Before they boarded the train, I blew a train whistle and called, “All Aboard”. I handed these tickets (or boarding passes) to the children as they entered the classroom. After investigating, they each found the bell under their seat.

After reading the story to the children, I “accidentally” bumped into one of the chairs to make the bell ring. I taped a silver bell to the bottom of each chair. Get the room ready by placing chairs in rows to simulate a train car. My students loved wearing pajamas to school! Have a Polar Express Day in your class! The photos below depict some of the activities I’ve done with my class and information regarding the resources I used to make this an exciting day for the children. The Polar Express is ambitious for sure, but the fact that its most sincere pieces are the six classics that make up its caboose is telling.Related Teaching Ideas Pages: Christmas Theme Silvestri's orchestral pieces are effective in tone, yet ape Danny Elfman's Edward Scissorhands theme so shamelessly that lawyers on both sides must have had words early on in the production. Tom Hanks does his best Gene Wilder on the whimsical and strangely unnerving title track, a wonderfully unhinged performance that will have Willy Wonka fans clamoring for more, and the winsome vocals of preteens Matthew Hall and Meagan Moore give the ballad "When Christmas Comes to Town" a real sense of wonder.

Tyler struts his stuff on the amiable but derivative "Rockin' on Top of the World," a three-chord rave-up that finds the Aerosmith mouthpiece channeling a pack of howler monkeys, but it's Groban's syrupy, future American Idol favorite "Believe" that serves as the soundtrack's commercial centerpiece. Composers Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri provide the latter, relying on swelling choral arrangements, tender ballads, and polarizing yuletide offerings from Stephen Tyler and Josh Groban. The soundtrack to Robert Zemeckis' groundbreaking film adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book The Polar Express celebrates the season with both classic and contemporary holiday flair.
